My exploration of Sondheim’s Assassins is set in the present day, in a young man’s cramped and incredibly ordinary apartment, which gets overwhelmed by the world of carnival midway. As the mythological figures from our country’s history share their plights and fantasies of violent grandeur, we are encouraged to ask who is next after Lee Harvey Oswald? Who bares the burden of carrying on their legacy, and why is he one of us?
